Here are my three… a Thursday addendum to the MMM

Wilco and Billy Bragg, “California Stars”
This comes from their Mermaid Avenue recordings in which Billy and Wilco collaborate musically over the great unfinished work of Woody Guthrie. Just a small, yet wonderful nugget from the deep chest of Guthrie’s un-sung lyrics. His daughter gave them permission to play with his work. I wonder how this would play today if somebody took on of Lennon’s poems… what would Yoko say?!

Thievery Corporation, “The Heart’s A Lonely Hunter (feat. David Byrne”
Trip Hop? Acid Jazz? Whatever the Thievery Corporation “is”, I dig it, and it should be dug by many more. Their name is ironic in that shortly after completing some tapes for their record company 4AD in the late 90s, they had to postpone its release after the tapes were stolen in a mugging.

Moby, “Find My Baby”
There is much to be said about Moby. I will choose to reveal to you that this song and the album it lives in (”Play”, 1999) are the soundtrack to my freshman year of high school. Indeed, while others were enjoying mildly entertaining material such as Blink 182 and Creed, I was rockin’ out to our favorite vegan DJ.

I have nothing against Neneh’s second album — and I know it holds a special place in your heart, Greg, since it almost got you on a panel with Queen Latifah — but it never moved me the way it moved you. I still love you in spite of your obvious faults and character defects, though. Or maybe because of them. :)

Neneh Cherry’s second album was beyond brilliant. One of the best albums of the last twenty-five years (so what do you know?). She released a third album entitled ‘Man’ that was only available as import; it was so-so (though a great cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man” and a few stirring originals). Neneh Cherry is in a band called cirKus (but their only release has been in France — I have it but not worth tracking down). But I will make you copies of any of her stuff. Soft spot in my heart (Neneh, that is … oh okay, you too).

You make a good point about using the name Original to describe our caucasian Smile on a Stick. No insult was intended especially since we have a mixed racial content in our family.

We simply started with naming the first product “the Original Smile on a Stick” and didn’t invest in the other styles until years later.

Thank you for enjoying our product and providing a link to a vendor. I will personally look into this issue now that it has been brought to my attention.

One does not generally have “swank marijuana tasting parties” in 9th grade. And the event I was reminded of was certainly not some amateur reconstruction (or prefiguration, as the case might be) of such an event. Today, very few (if any) people would refer to me with a straight face as “swank.” Anyone who might’ve done so when I was 13 would have to have been working their way through a very large stash of drugs far more potent than cannabis…

A few phone calls to the city confirmed that it is, in fact, standard policy for Minneapolis police to run the tags on all vehicles involved in any accident — no matter how incidentally — and then to include the owners’ names in the formal report.

And today, in my snail mail, there was a postcard from yesterday’s overly eager chiropractor-caller explaining that “my best course of action after an accident” includes seeing a chiropractor.

I think that’s pretty much how it works: it’s why they’re called ambulance chasers. I was on a jury a while back for a civil suit that one of these types of firms brought. It was very interesting to see, particularly when they wheeled out their doctor-on-retainer (actually an osteopath) to testify that their client was indeed mysteriously injured in an almost non-accident.

The bridge is — was — right next to campus, and I-35W is the major north-south highway running through Minneapolis. I didn’t use that bridge every day, but it also wouldn’t have been unusual for me to have done so: I crossed it at least twice last week, walked by it on two other occasions, and was more or less right around the corner a mere hour before it fell. Heh! When Richard and I were married, several eons ago now, after living together for five years, we filed a joint tax return. Of course, I kept my own last name. The next year, the IRS went looking for the scofflaw, Norma Jean Nagel, with my SSN, who hadn’t filed her taxes. Ain’t bureaucracy grand?!

In the end(?), the head cleaner that helped me out most yesterday was Neko Case’s “Timber.” Nothing like the glorious keen of Neko-voice and a healthy dose of driving alt-country-swing rhythms to push musical abominations away.
