Award Descriptions

Arle and Billy Haeberle Undergraduate Award

Purpose: This award honors Arle and Billy Haeberle, two of the Twin Cities' pioneer women in broadcasting.

Value: $2,000.00

Eligibility: Applicants for this award

  • Must be accepted majors in the Department of Communication Studies OR have major concentrations in communication studies in IDIM, BIS, etc.
  • Must have completed at least 60 credits. Applicant must also have completed 9 additional units in Communication Studies classes
  • Must have an overall grade-point average of at least 3.2
  • Must not have completed a B.A. at the time of application
  • Should be planning a career that involves electronic media. For example, an applicant might plan to work for a radio, television, or internet media organization, or an independent production company, or an applicant might plan a career in broadcast research, media education, political advising, public relations, etc.

The application letter should describe your career goals, and you may wish to include examples of work you have done that is relevant to media studies. You may note financial need, but demonstrated need is not a necessary condition of the award.

You may include a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or TA in the Department of Communication Studies. (optional)

The Department of Communication Studies is not responsible for any tax implications.

In some circumstances, because of a cap on students' financial aid packages, scholarship money may be used to defray student loans.

Marguerite Garden Jones Undergraduate Award

Purpose: Chester Jones, a university alumnus, established this award in memory of his wife, Marguerite Garden Jones (1914-1978), who also graduated from the University of Minnesota, with a degree in communication and literature.

Value: $2,000.00 (1 award of $2,000.00 or 2 awards of $1,000.00 each may be given depending on the size of the applicant pool)

Eligibility: Applicants for this award

  • Must be accepted majors in the Department of Communication Studies
  • Must have completed at least 60 credits
  • Must have a grade-point average of at least 3.2 in the major
  • Must demonstrate a high level of achievement in all academic work

Application details:

This application should include evidence demonstrating your ability to apply what you have learned in departmental courses to activities outside the classroom. Relevant evidence might include descriptions of community projects or extracurricular activities, formal writing, videotapes, reports of observers, etc. You may find the advice of your professors particularly helpful in deciding what evidence to include.

Note: The endowment that funds this award also funds the Marguerite Garden Jones Graduate Award. Depending on the financial condition of the endowment in any given year, the department may present both the undergraduate and the graduate awards, or only one or the other.

Stuart A. Lindman Undergraduate Scholarship

Purpose: Stuart A. Lindman, a former newscaster with several Twin Cities broadcasting stations, has honored our department by designating us as the home of the Stuart A. Lindman Scholarship Fund. This award is made possible through the generosity of Lindman's last employer, Gannett Broadcasting and KARE-TV.

Value: $1,000.00 (1 award may be given)

Eligibility: Applicants for this award

  • Must be accepted majors in the Department of Communication Studies OR have major concentrations in communication studies in IDIM, BIS, etc.
  • Must have completed at least 30 credits. Applicant must also have completed 9 additional units in Communication Studies classes
  • Must have an overall grade-point average of at least 3.0
  • Must be a Minnesota resident
  • Should be planning a career that involves electronic media. For example, an applicant might plan to work for a radio, television, or internet media organization, or an independent production company, or an applicant might plan a career in broadcast research, media education, political advising, public relations, etc.

Nick Schoen III Undergraduate Scholarship

Purpose: In 1999 Charles Schoen, acting for the Schoen family, established this prize to honor the memory of his brother, Nick Schoen III. Charles and Nick Schoen graduated from the university in the early 1960's and became businessmen in the Twin Cities. They found opportunities that they had not realized existed when they were students, but they also found that their education had prepared them well to adapt to changing circumstances, and to succeed in their working lives. The Schoen family hopes to encourage students who are preparing for their futures. This award may be renewed for a second year.

Value: $1,000.00 (1 award may be given)

Eligibility: Applicants for this award

  • Must be undergraduate majors in communication studies, who are full-time CLA students (13 credit minimum)
  • Must have an overall grade-point average of at least 3.2
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Must not graduate before or during the semester in which the award is given; funds may be used to defray the cost of tuition or books

William O. and Natalie Krauch Lund Endowed Scholarship in Communication Studies

Purpose: In establishing this scholarship, Ms. Lund wishes to financially assist nontraditional undergraduate students earning a degree in the College of Liberal Arts Department of Communication Studies. Applicants must fulfill the graduation requirements in that major through study of public discourse, interpersonal communication, language and gender, small group communication, intercultural communication, and mass media studies. This scholarship may be renewed for more than one year if the recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirements. Scholarship money may be used to defray the costs of tuition or required textbooks.

Value: up to $3,000.00 (1 or 2 awards may be given)

Eligibility: Applicants for this award

  • Must be accepted majors in the Department of Communication Studies
  • Full-time students carrying 13 or more credits & enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts
  • Must have a grade-point average of a least 3.0 in the major
