Commpost

As Charles Dickens wrote, "it was the best of times, it was the worse of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…"  The good news is that the Department of Communication Studies continues its tradition of excellence, as you will see illustrated in this issue of COMMPOST.  The bad news, in case you have not heard, is that the State of Minnesota has projected a huge budget deficit for the next biennium and the University expects sizable budget cuts.  There is no question that we will feel the effects and see substantial cuts in our Department, much as we did in previous recessions.  We are hoping that the administration will demonstrate wisdom rather than foolishness in their decisions but don’t bet on it.  Even though we are a highly efficient department that returns far more in tuition to the college than we cost them, we expect significant cuts to come our way.  We will do our best to make prudent choices but if you have any questions or want to know how you can help do not hesitate to give me a call at (612) 624-2808 or email schiappa@umn.edu
